It’s going to be alright, girls. We know what it’s like to be in the throes of a full-blown PMS outbreak. And for all the other things that we suffer through because the hormones in our bodies decide to have fun of their own, we’ve just been informed that there are some very easy (and cool) natural remedies. As the hormones in our bodies (like progesterone, oestrogen, etc) increase and decrease, they trigger several symptoms, a lot of them unpleasant. So, here are some great natural remedies to keep these symptoms in check.

Curd for Cramps

Yes. You read that right. Curd or yoghurt is rich in calcium. And increasing your calcium intake can help relieve menstrual cramps. Other calcium-rich foods that you can try are milk, cheese, green leafy vegetables, broccoli, almonds and fortified fruit juices. Doctors suggest that you eat these foods in modest servings throughout each day, rather than eating them at one meal.

nuts for balancing hormones

Nuts for menstrual bloating

According to some researchers, more than 50% women experience bloating during their periods. To relieve, eat nuts. About half a cup everyday should do it. Bloating is caused by the retention of fluids in body tissues. Nuts contain vitamin E and alpha-linolenic acid. These naturally occurring repositories of anti-inflammatories help reduce the formation of prostaglandins – the culprit hormone that causes fluid retention.

Carbs to beat the blues

While we all knew that eating can make you feel better, it is even better to beat those pre-menstrual blues. Especially when they’re whole grains. Whole grains are a rich source of Vitamin B, complex carbohydrates (yes, those things that diets tell you to keep off), and minerals; all of which help the brain release those mood-lifting hormones: endorphins, dopamine, oxytocin.

potatoes for balancing hormones

Potatoes for irritablity

Next time you want to bite off someone’s head because you’re just upset (and when you have your period to blame for the irritability), take a break and enjoy one medium-sized baked potato. Scientists believe that it can help you feel better in 10 minutes flat, and keep your irritability away for 6 to 8 hours. Good for office. Potatoes contain the amino acid tryptophan which helps build the hormone serotonin – the mood-boosting hormome.
