Malaria is a life threatening disease. Although the cases of malaria has been reduced drastically in last decade but still half of the world population is at risk.
In India different plans are launched by the government bodies for proper drainage of water and waste management. The regular practice of removing the standing stagnant water and spray of insecticides reduce the chances of production of female anopheles and thus disease progression. The options like repellent creams, insecticide spray, and bed nets are there to prevent the diseases induction but we still encounter about 580,000 deaths per year worldwide.
The genetically designed mosquitoes are the new option for malaria prevention. The scientists from United States are claiming to develop a mutant variety of mosquitoes using a type of mosquito found in India - Anopheles stephensi.
This strain of mosquitoes is capable of introducing malaria blocking genes into the mosquito population. This breed of mutant mosquitoes will serve as a weak host for poor host for the malaria parasite. This set of mosquitoes are are so designed that they produce antibodies in human body against the malarial parasite. Scientists are doing trials with mating of a malaria-resistant male mosquito mates with a wild female and thus developing a variety which have the resistance to malaria.
The scientists are trying to develop this variety in a way so that the mutant properties will be carried till three generation.
One other team of scientists are working on development of the varieties which can is involved in egg production in female anopheles. This will result in reduced mosquito population and thus reducing the threat which may causes epidemic like situation in 1950’s.
The idea of developing this breed to mosquitoes can do wonderful for even in cases of other diseases like dengue and chikunguniya.
