Muscle Cramps in DiabeticsCramping of muscles can occur due to the diabetes-related artery disease in the incidence of reduction of blood circulation. Muscle cramps due low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) are often confused with the muscle cramps occurring due to reduced blood circulation, a nerve compression, improper conditioning or prolonged exercise. Another possible reason for the cramping, tingling and numbness of muscles could be tissue breakdown, damaged muscular nerve cells and electrolyte imbalance.

Consumption of sugar has an indirect impact on blood glucose levels as consuming it beyond a certain level may lead to cramping in diabetic condition. Untreated diabetic condition cannot absorb sufficient amounts of glucose or blood sugar from the bloodstream for the production of glucose (needed for energy). As a result, glucose gets accumulated in the bloodstream. This circumstance of electrolyte is critical and can influence muscle cells or damage nerve cells.
