Maturity onset diabetes of the young is caused due to a single gene, which limits the ability of the pancreas to produce insulin. Several different gene mutations have been shown to cause MODY. Currently, six types of MODY are recognised based on gene defect. As MODY is a genetic defect, it may not be possible to prevent it, but you may be able to postpone the development of symptoms until later in life by following a healthy lifestyle. Read to know the measures to delay the onset of MODY and prevent complications due to high blood sugar levels.
Know your risk: if you have a strong family history of diabetes, consult your doctor to get tested for gene defects that cause MODY. If you have mutation of genes, which cause MODY, you can take measures to avoid obesity (such as eat healthy diet, do regular exercise etc). These may not prevent MODY, but may delay the development of symptoms until later in life.
Eat healthy: healthy diet should include food from all the major food groups such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat and low fat dairy products. Prefer to eat whole grain food products such as brown bread instead of white bread, brown rice instead of white rice etc. Avoid processed, fatty and food with simple carbohydrates. Your doctor or dietician can advise you better regarding the food that should be taken or avoided.
Exercise regularly: Sedentary lifestyle is known to be a major factor in causing lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and high blood lipids. Regular physical activity or exercise for about 30 minutes on most days of the week can help you reduce the risk of these diseases. Do any exercises (such as cycling, swimming) that you like and can easily do on a daily basis.
Avoid smoking and limit alcohol: Studies have shown that smoking and alcohol may increase the risk of diabetes and complications due to diabetes.
