Manorexia on a Rise

Current trend indicates that men will surpass women in eating disorders, with a significant rise of anorexia in men over the years. Referred to as ‘Menorexia’, the idea is to starve self for achieving slim bodyline. Owing to increasing pressure to look slim, life threatening eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia have become common in men.

In comparison last decade, men and boys needing urgent treatment for severe eating disorders has tripled, reported NHS figures of 228 hospital admissions in UK. These alarming figures reveal the pressure to attain near-perfect muscular look. Such attempts are usually inspired by body images of male celebrities and models. The fad of getting six-pack abs or becoming hunky is the presumed way of teenagers to receive girls' attention.

Females were presumed to have been suffering from eating disorder, but males hesitate in admitting that they have such a problem. Surprisingly, there were substantial admissions for teenagers belonging to age group 14 to 18. Moreover, boys of ten were also reported to have marred by bulimia. The trend has shown steep rise in Britons, reportedly fifth of the 1.6million British men suffer from eating disorder.

Anorexia is a syndrome that pushes one to maintain weight as low as possible by marked eating and obsessive exercising. Doctors stated that actual reason of rising condition is still unknown, but male celebrities, fashion trends and significance of social networking portals have fuelled eating disorders’ rise among men. Another reason to have caused the condition is stress of events like exams or relationship issues. Experiencing stress, individuals develop low self-esteem and feel withdrawn.

Experts underlined that conditions like menorexia are successfully treatable if identified in the early stages. If not, sufferers might suffer more!
