Children who socialize and participate in sports also tend to have better mental health than those who do not.
Most children enjoy healthy childhoods with a little need for specialized medical attention. However, children affected with Cerebral Palsy (CP) need specialized health services to live long, happy and quality life. It is an ailment that affects the motor control region of the brain and the muscular system of a child. It affects a child’s posture and the ability to move and is caused by a one-time brain injury.
Children with Cerebral Palsy can live a happy, long and quality life. However, their care may involve more visits to health care practitioners; require therapy or medications, and perhaps surgery at some point. CP’s severity majorly depends on the part of the brain that is harmed and depending upon the damage, and the condition affects children in different ways. It impacts a child’s balance, muscle tone and control, reflexes, coordination, and voluntary and involuntary movements.
Dr Shekhar Patil, Surya Hospitals, says, “Cerebral palsy is a common neurodevelopment disorder of childhood with a prevalence of 1.5-2.5 per 1000 live births. There is no known cure for it; proactive care by parents, physicians and other caregivers can improve child expectancy.”
Though CP does not cause other disabilities independently, it is often accompanied by associated conditions that have unfavourable effects on a child’s life expectancy. These conditions include:
- Intellectual impairment
- Vision impairment
- Eating difficulties
- Inability to walk

Proper Medications and therapies can help to extend the lifespan of a child diagnosed with cerebral palsy. The specific medical regimen is essential, and parents need to be in regular touch with experts to circumscribe which treatments will have the most positive effect.
Improving Mental Health
It is critical to managing the emotional quotient of the affected children. Emotional well-being plays an essential role in their long healthy life. Group therapy can be an excellent way for children with cerebral palsy to make friends and reduce stress. Children with cerebral palsy can participate in dance, sports with adaptive equipment, such as a wheelchair or a brace.
It is proven that every case is different and needs specific treatment and care. Parents of an affected child do not require to compare their children’s condition with somebody else’s as each is unique. Doctors always prescribe treatment and therapies depending upon the specific requirement and children are given the most optimal treatment plan.
