Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite called the plasmodium. People who have malaria usually encounter high fever and experience shivering. Every year, approximately 210 million people are infected with malaria, and about 440,000 people die from the disease. It usually begins with tremours and chills, followed by high fever, followed by sweating, and then return to average temperature. The signs and symptoms of malaria typically begin a few weeks after being bitten by an infected mosquito. According to Ayurveda, malaria infections usually show the following signs and symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Muscle aches and fatigue
  • Sweating
  • Chest and stomach pain
  • Cough

What To Do

  • According to Ayurveda, include lentils, rice porridge, vegetables like brinjal, pointed gourd (parwal), green gram soup, black gram soup, castor oil, Long pepper root and herbs like amalaki in your diet. All these are essential in increasing immunity against malaria. If you have flu or fever, go to the doctor immediately and get tested and look for various measures to control symptoms to increase further.
  • Sleep on a nylon mattress by spraying permethrin. Also, malaria is of four types, and one should know which type has basically what kind of symptoms for better judgment of the disease. Use mosquito repellent drugs, especially in the evening. Make sure that you spray mosquito-repellents under the table, bed, chair and on the walls. Also, spray around the window corners.
  • Sprinkle permethrin on clothes and make a habit of wearing full-sleeved clothes while going out in the open, especially during evenings or in markets where there may be chances of mosquitoes.

  • Taking 5-10 mil of giloy juice daily when suffering from malaria, helps in enhancing immunity. Packed with antioxidants, this is an Ayurvedic herb, which makes a recovery a much faster and smoother process. It boosts haemoglobin and improves body strength to increase resistance against the disease. But, the effectiveness of taking herbs like these positively affects the severity of the disease as one must always consult a doctor before taking any alternative medicine.
  • Maintain cleanliness around you. Do not allow water to accumulate on the roof of the house or near your house as accumulated water calls for mosquito breeding, especially those mosquitoes, which can transmit malaria.
  • Stay in a ventilated room. Keep the door closed in the evening to reduce mosquito outbreaks.

What To Avoid

  • Do not travel to places where there is more outbreak of malaria or mosquitoes. Try to avoid to venture out, especially after sunset. Also, avoid applying perfume. This attracts mosquitoes.
  • Do not wear dark coloured clothes and do not sweat. According to research, mosquitoes bite more because of these two factors. If you are allergic to permethrin, then avoid spraying the same as mentioned above.

  • Do not consume foods with cool properties, including banana, orange, papaya, watermelon, cucumber as these can make your symptoms worsen, making your malaria symptoms increase to a greater extent. Also avoid carbonated drinks, coffee, pickles, alcohol, spicy and hot food, etc.
