Citrus fruits play a vital role in keeping our body free of toxins. "Citrus fruits contain healthy nutrition content that works wonders for the body and makes your immunity strong so that you are able to fight diseases," said Shilpi Behl, dietician.
Citrus fruits act as a fabulous source of Vitamin C and a wide range of essential nutrients required by the body. "The list of citrus fruit is a long one with names like clementine, leechi, lime, grapefruit, mandarin, tangerine, kumquat, minneola, tangelo, lemon, orange and pummelo," added Shilpi.
The real taste lies in consuming raw fresh citrus fruit. Citrus fruits have an amazing fragrance and this explains the reason why they top the fruits list. "Usually these fruits are juicy and it is this juice that contains the main acidic element, which gives the fruit a characteristic sharp flavour," said Dr Behl. The colour of the citrus fruit depends upon the climatic conditions.
Lemons and limes
Lemons and limes are the winners in the citrus acidity count. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) comprise up to 32 per cent of the fruit’s weight. Lemon juice contains 187 per cent Vitamin C. Citric acid makes up 5 - 6 per cent of the fruit’s content. Lemons contain approximately three per cent pantothenic acid.
Oranges have the smallest concentration of Vitamin C of all the citrus fruits. One medium orange typically contains between 50 and 70 mg of Vitamin C. Oranges also have .08 to 1 per cent citric acid. Different varieties of oranges have differing amounts of Vitamin C.
Grapefruit is higher in Vitamin C than oranges, second only to its citrus relatives, lemons and limes. One cup of measured segments contains 120 per cent Vitamin C, 1.5 per cent to 2.5 per cent citric acid and lower acid levels overall.
