heart condition known by faceA new study has now revealed that it is possible for us to know whether or not a person is going through any abnormal heart rhythm, also known as atrial fibrillation. This is considered to be a treatable, but it is also a potentially dangerous heart condition.

The scientists used web camera and software algorithms in order to demonstrate the changes that happen in skin colour and that which can be used in order to detect the uneven blood flow caused by atrial fibrillation.

Jean-Philippe Couderc from the University of Rochester’s heart research follow-up program said in a statement, "This technology holds the potential to identify and diagnose cardiac disease using contact less video monitoring.”

A software algorithm developed by Xerox Corporation Limited scans the face and can detect changes in the skin colour which are not traceable to the naked eye. The sensors used in digital cameras are designed for three colours, and they are red, green and blue. The hemoglobin in the blood happens to be able to absorb more green in the spectrum of light; therefore, this change gets detected by the camera’s sensor.

The participants were made to hook up to an electrocardiogram to see whether the results from the facial scan could be compared to that of the actual electrical activity going on in the heart. And then it was found that the colour changes which were detected by the video monitoring corresponded with the participant’s heart rare which was detected on the ECG.
