Avoid Infections

 

Take precautions to avoid lung infections such as consult your doctor for flu and pneumonia vaccines. Wash your hands often with soap and water and avoid crowded places to lower your risk of infections.

 

Eat Healthy

 

Eat healthy food. Your diet should include a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Include protein rich foods such as lean meats, poultry, fish, and beans in your diet. Prefer use of fat-free or low-fat milk or milk products and avoid foods high in saturated fat, trans-fat, cholesterol, sodium (salt), and added sugar.

 

Stay Hydrated

 

Drink plenty of fluids (water and other fluids) to prevent the airway mucus from becoming thick and sticky.

 

Be Active

 

Stay as physically active as possible. Consult your doctor to know the types and amounts of activity which is safe for you. Being active helps to loosen the mucus and so that it can be coughed up more easily.

 

Quit Smoking

 

Some other measures which can help to protect your airways are quit smoking, avoid lung irritants such as second hand smoke, dust, and fumes.
