Lipsticks Laced with Toxic Metals

Many popular lipsticks and lip glosses may be laced with toxic metals, claims a study. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley's School of Public Health in US examined 32 different lipsticks and lip glosses, to find that it had lead, cadmium, chromium, aluminium and five other metals. Prior studies also have found metals in cosmetics, but this study found the levels that could raise potential health concerns.

The researchers estimated the risk by analysing the concentration of the metals detected and consumers' potential daily intake of the metals. Thereafter, they compared the intake with existing health guidelines. Lipstick and lip gloss are a serious matter of concern because these are not being blotted on tissue, but are ingested or absorbed.

The researchers defined the average and high use of lip makeup. A daily ingestion of 24 milligrammes of lip makeup per day was the average use while high use of lip makeup was 87 milligrammes per day.

Researchers suggest that the average use of some lipsticks and lip glosses may result in excessive exposure to chromium, a carcinogen linked to stomach tumours. High use of these makeup products could result in potential overexposure to aluminium, cadmium and manganese, in addition to exposure to chromium. The high concentration of manganese has been linked to toxicity in the nervous system.
