In poorly ventilated offices pollens, moulds and dust mites get trapped. Although you can’t spot them easily but these become allergy triggers and cause you more harm than you could think of. Once you develop an allergy or are already allergic to those allergens, allergy symptoms can come in your way at work and hamper your productivity. Sneezing and wheezing, burning and itchy eyes, fatigue, headaches and nasal and chest congestion can easily derail your focus from work and completely drain you out. But that’s not it; if you decide to take anti-allergen medications they  make you snooze too. So, how is it that you can limit allergen interference at work?

The very first symptom of occupational illnesses or allergy in this case is that you get these allergy attacks only when at work. Notice if you feel better when you’re at home, over the weekends.  If this is the case then you must make your employer aware of this problem.

Take a look at the allergens that might be the trouble-makers. Nail them and see how your employer can help you in making your life a little better sans allergens at work.

Often people associate allergy symptoms with work, but most don’t know that allergy symptoms could be a consequence of high-pressure work, juggling between deadlines, conflicts with colleagues and long working hours. If so is the case and you haven’t really pointed your finger on any allergen sources at work, probably you must sit down to calm yourself and speak to your reporting manager. Ask them to take off some weight off your shoulder if the work’s coming in way of your health. You will have to work it with them so that it is mutually beneficial.

How to make your office space better for you?

  • Make sure that your office is clean and dusted regularly; if not then you must get it cleaned and dusted immediately.
  • Wear a mask if you clean your workspace.
  • You have to take charge of your health and hence check if the floor is well-ventilated.
  • Carpets tend to collect all the dust, so you can ask for it to be removed from your cubicle or wherever you sit.
  • Do not bring pillows or stuffed toys at work because these can easily trap allergens and this is not going to do any good to you to relieve you of allergy symptoms.
  • Ask your colleagues not to smoke when you’re around. Ask your supervisor to create smoke-free zones.
  • Remove plants from your room.
  • Mould spores breed in coffee so don’t keep an empty coffee mug on your desk for long.
  • Photocopiers or photocopy machines are known to emit ozone; ask for the copier to be kept in a well-ventilated room.
  • If you can’t do much about any of this, you might want to consider a job change where your health will not be compromised.


Appropriate Medications

If you suffer from congestion, use nasal sprays and if you have watery eyes, eye drops can come to your rescue. These make sure you are proactive about your treatment. Do not think that you need medication only when you start feeling the trouble lurking somewhere. You must start taking them right at the beginning of the season before it becomes unmanageable.
