Lifestyle Modifications for Diabetics

Know the lifestyle modifications for diabetics that are essential for managing your diabetic condition such as exercise, saying no to alcohol, and others.

People suffering from diabetes need to make various necessary changes in order to keep it under control. Moreover, people who are exposed to the risk of diabetes because of genetic reasons need to do the same.

Here are some important lifestyle modifications that would help the patients fight against diabetes:

Quit Smoking

All of us are aware of the ill effects of smoking on our health. However, these effects are even more harmful for the people suffering from diabetes. Smoking increases the cholesterol level and creates a blockage in blood vessels. It is also a cause for respiratory infections. Moreover, diabetics who indulge in smoking may experience more frequent nerve and kidney diseases. It may also hamper the mobility of your joints. Apart from these problems, it increases your blood sugar level and can expose you to the risk of heart attack.

Cut down on Alcohol Consumption

Having alcohol in a moderate amount does not affect the blood sugar level much. Women can have one serving per day while men can have two. However, if you across this limit, it may prove to be worsening for your diabetic condition. Moreover, you should pay attention to what is being used for mixing alcohol. Avoid fruits juices, colas and other sweetened drinks as mixers. One more disadvantage of alcohol is that it contains unhealthy calories that may come in your way of losing weight. Therefore, it is advisable to keep your alcohol consumption to a minimum.

Exercise a lot

People suffering from diabetes should make exercise a part of their daily life as it keeps your heart healthy and also helps in losing weight. Diabetics should keep some important points in mind while exercising. These are listed below:

  1. People who are above 35 years of age and suffering from diabetes for more than 10 years should consult their doctor before planning their exercise sessions. You should go under exercise stress test under medical supervision.
  2. Diabetics should choose exercises that increase their heart rate for a longer period of time. Some of the best choices are cycling, swimming, walking or jogging. One can opt out of these exercises if their stamina and interest is not into it.
  3. Diabetics should plan their workout sessions in such a way that they do not feel any discomfort, and in case they wish to increase their intensity; it should be done very gradually. However, if you experience any sort of discomfort such as chest pain, stop immediately and seek medical help.

Diabetes is a health condition that cannot be cured and therefore, patients need to learn to live with it. It is very important for you to bring the required modifications in your lifestyle. The foremost step for this is to develop the willingness to change. You need to build a strong will power for the fight against diabetes and keeping it in check.
