According to a new study, laughing for 20 minutes everyday can help in boosting short term memory.
Laughter is the best medicine, they say and quite clearly, there is scientific evidence to prove that a short period of laughter can promise better mind, body and soul. A new study suggested that laughing can help one to improve short-term memory in older adults. This is because humour reduces the level of stress and blood pressure and boosts mood. The study was conducted by researchers at the Loma Linda University in US.
For the study, about 20 normal, healthy, older adults watched funny video for 20 minutes, while a control group stayed calm without any video.
The researchers later performed memory tests and drew analyses of the participants’ saliva samples to check for stress hormones. They found that the people who laughed during the 20 minutes funny video watching session scored better on the short-term memory tests.
The researchers also found that the levels of stress as found in the saliva samples were significantly low in the humour group. The author of the study, Dr Gurinder S Bains, PhD candidate in Rehabilitation Sciences, said that laughing with friends or watching humour for 20 minutes on the television, helps him to cope with stress. He added that one must begin by laughing more everyday as this improves the quality of life.
According to the co-author of the study, Dr Lee Berk, humour reduces the amount of stress hormones being released in the body as well as blood pressure, thus improving or enhancing the mood. He also said that laughter increases the amount of endorphins in the body and sends out dopamine to the brain, providing dopamine to the brain. This release of mood-friendly hormones gives a sense of reward as well as pleasure to the person. It also increases the efficiency of immune system and changes brain wave activity towards gamma frequency amping up the memory and recall.
