  • Tobacco and smoking- Filled with chemicals, nicotine can result in the inflammation of the lungs and restrict the airways causing the decline in the lung function. It irritates the lungs and causing abrasive inflammation which may even cause chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
  • Another major cause of asthma is air pollution. Especially in a city like ours where air pollution is so high, the chance of suffering from asthma is very significant. Nebulizer treatment may be needed if breathing becomes severe; it is often accompanied by wheezing and chest heaving. In the house, air pollution can be caused by mosquito coils and combustion of cooking products. Therefore, ensure that you use mosquito repellant creams and keep the exhaust on.

  • Dust mites, mould, newly painted houses and pollen are factors which can aggravate an asthmatic condition or set it off completely. They tickle the nose and causing sneezing, which triggers persistent asthma and wheezing. Therefore, cleaning regularly and ensuring that soft toys and bed linen are soaked in hot water and are clean is essential. Additionally, asthmatic patients should avoid strong smells like cold food and beverages, perfumes, and smoke of any kind even during aartis and prayers.
  • Pets could produce animal dander and trigger asthma. Therefore, they need to be regularly brushed and kept outdoors where they are free to run about.
  • Obesity, rhinitis, rhinosinusitis and stress are internal factors which can cause Asthma. They are associated with low-grade inflammation and oxidative stress, causing a person to have difficulty breathing. Additionally, intake of anti-flu vaccinations is a preventive strategy in fighting asthma exacerbations.

The need to convey to you all is that Asthma is not a condition which should be ignored or not taken seriously. It is dangerous, and in circumstances where immediate aid cannot be provided, it can become fatal.
