Jet lag increases the risk of liver cancer: Study

As per a new study, frequent flight use resulting in chronic jet lag is linked to induction of liver disorders including cancer. The difference in time zone and irregular sleep pattern is the main causative of jet lag.

As per a new study, frequent flight use resulting in chronic jet lag is linked to induction of liver disorders including cancer. The difference in time zone and irregular sleep pattern is the main causative of jet lag.

Jet lag

This study was conducted at the Baylor College of Medicine where the chronically jet lagged mice were found to develop obesity leading to development of tumors in liver. This pattern of cancer development is same as seen in obese people. For this study, the mice were served with different artificial conditions that mimicked the situation developed during flight like shift in light supply.

It was found that the mice gained weight and fat, and developed fatty liver disease. Further, it progressed to chronic inflammation and eventually liver cancer in some cases. The mice with jet lag were found to lost control over the normal metabolism of the liver resulting in increased production of bile salts leading to cancer.

Although this finding was not supported by clinical studies but has shown relevance with the result of many studies that observed the causes of liver cancer induction.
As per the experts maintaining internal physiological homeostasis is really important for liver tumour suppression. This internal homeostasis can be achieved by following a normal healthy lifestyle.
