Reality of 'toxin-free' nail polish!
A California report has spurted sad news out for mani-ped fans. The report has revealed that nail polish and other beauty products that are labelled “toxin-free” in markets or beauty parlours may actually have high levels of toxic chemicals. According to scientist Valetti Lang, acting manager of the Pollution Prevention Branch of the Department of Toxic Substances Control for the California Environmental Protection Agency, the labelling on beauty products does not necessarily reflect the content of the product.
Valetti’s team purchased 25 nail products in May 2011 and sent the samples to a lab. The lab tested the samples for three specific chemicals, namely, dibutyl phthalate, formaldehyde and toluene that are commonly known as the toxic-trio.
A few years ago, the chemicals were removed from the list of ingredients because of their potent threat to health of the nail salon workers. What Lang, however, found is that the non-existence of the chemicals from the labels did not necessarily mean so. The researchers also found that some products that carried the label “toxic-free” did actually not have those chemicals.
The study was carried out using a combination of top coat, thinner, base coat, nail art etc. The researchers meticulously watched for the existence of a chemical named toluene, which is known to cause birth defects and problem in development of children born to a mother, who was exposed to the product for a prolonged period of time at the time of pregnancy. Another chemical that the researchers looked for is dibutyl phthalate, which causes birth defects.
Senior scientist, Rebecca Sutton, PhD, at the Environmental Working Group, says that the bottom-line of the test is that one cannot trust all the products that are sold at nail salons and therefore, pregnant women must avoid salon visits and others must visit as few times as possible.
