Vulvovaginitis is a condition that is caused by infection or inflammation of vagina. Around 1/3rd of women including girls of different age face this issue once in their lifetime. What is Vulvovaginitis?

It is an infection caused inside the vagina or vulva of due to inflammation. It refers to different conditions that are caused due to inflammation or infection of vulva and vagina. The women may suffer from constant itching, irritation and bad smell from vaginal discharge which can be very depressing. In most cases it affects both vulva and vagina but it depends on the cause and rate of infection that has spread.

  • Itching around vulva and genital area
  • Swelling and burning sensation
  • Dryness
  • Pain while urinating
  • Inflammation around labia
  • Increased smell from vagina
  • Having discomfort during sexual activity
  • Bad and strong smell from vaginal discharge

What are the Causes of Vulvovaginitis?

This infection or inflammation can be caused due to a number of reasons. It can be because of yeast, viruses, parasites, environmental factors, STI’s exposure to chemical irritants. However, most common cause of vulvovaginitis is due to bacteria. Let us know how these conditions can trigger infection in women.

1. Bacteria

This is one of the most common causes of vaginal infection. There is a bacterium called gardnarella that is responsible for causing this bacterial infection inside the vagina and vulva. Overgrowth of these bacteria’s inside the vagina causes this infection. This condition can result to greyish-white discharge with bad odour. 

2. Yeast

This is also one of the leading causes of vaginal infection in women that causes Vulvovaginitis. It is caused by Candida albicans which is a yeast infection. This spreads in the genital area and causes itching in the infected area. Yeast infection causes great discomfort and leads to thick white vaginal discharge that has very blur type of texture. In some cases the yeast infection is caused after consuming antibiotics. They kill the anti-fungal bacteria and thus lead to infection of yeast in the vagina.

3. Viruses

Virus can also cause vulvovaginitis, this condition usually occurs because of sexually transmitted diseases and infections. Herpes and human papillomavirus are the two major factors responsible for it.

4. Parasites

Parasites cause inflammation in the vulva and vagina that causes Vulvovaginitis. Parasites that are responsible for causing this condition are live, pinworms and scabies. 

5. Sexually Transmitted Infections

If you have vaginal infection due to this cause, then it can be very uncomfortable. Sexually transmitted infections can cause itching, genital discomfort and heavy discharge. STI that majorly causes this health condition is trichomonas vaginitis. The discharge after the infection can be of yellow, green or grey colour. It can also cause strong odor and smell.

6. Chemicals

Chemicals are basically because of soaps, feminine sprays, perfume and vaginal contraceptives. Chemicals like these can go inside your vagina and vulva and can cause irritation and infection. They cause allergic reactions inside the body which includes

  • Parabeans
  • Sodium sulphate
  • Dioxane and
  • Triclosan 

If any of these ingredients are present in your soap or detergent etc, then you should switch it immediately to avoid vaginal infection and allergies. This can also help you prevent infections from occurring in your body.

7. Environmental Factors

Factors that cause Vulvovaginitis can be due to products or hygiene issues. If you do not keep proper hygiene in your private areas then there are high chances of having vaginal infection. Tight clothing can also cause this condition because of constant rubbing against the skin which can trap moisture and cause severe irritation. Irritated skin is more vulnerable for Vulvovaginitis and can also take long for recovery.
