Indian researchers have mapped the proteins in a human being's body. This discovery could change the way heart problems and cancers are diagnosed and treated.
Researchers from the Institute of Bioinformatics in Bangalore have for the first time decoded a complete protein map of the humans, which will be considered as a medical discovery of the potential to change treatment as well as diagnosis of heart problems and even cancers.
The main partner in the research is Johns Hopkins University of Baltimore and there were about 46 researchers working from India working on the study. The discovery can give people information as to why human beings suffer from cardiac problems, diabetes, cancer and other diseases in the first place.
While researchers had opined earlier that simple sequencing of the genes can help in unraveling the mystery of life, the real and exact potential of a human’s genes was not realised. Scientists found it hard to proceed in the research because of the lack of information about proteins that interpret genetic details into functional units such as enzymes and proteins.
Ageing as well as a lot of other ailments develop as a result of enzymes as well as protein becoming dysfunctional and no one really understands why it happens.
The lead researcher of the study, Akhilesh Pandey, who is also the founder director of IOB, Bangalore and a professor of Johns Hopkins University said that even though India did not really take part in the human genome project, the successful completion of human proteome map by the Indian researchers put the country at the forefront of global efforts to bring into picture the human proteome. He added that this is a moment of pride as well as satisfaction for science and research in the country.
The discovery will be published in the top British Periodical Nature named, “A draft map of the human proteome”.
