A new research suggests that humans eat as much as 92 percent of what is served to them on their plate. They added that being careful of what you put on your plate can help you control your portion.
You thought you never ate most of that food on your plate? Here is a study that begs to differ. According to it, an average adult eats about 92 percent of whatever is put on his/her plate.
Brian Wansink, Professor of Marketing and Director of the Cornell Food and Brand Lab, said, “If you put it on your plate, it is going into your stomach.” Wansink along with his co-author Katherine Abowd Johnson analysed at least 1, 179 diners and concluded that we are a “Clean Plate Planet”.
Even though the diners were analysed in eight developed countries i.e. Canada, U.S., Taiwan, France, Finland, Korea and the Netherlands, the results were almost identical. The researchers said that if we serve the food well, we are likely to eat it regardless of gender and nationality.
Johnson said that part of the reason why we tend to finish most of what we serve is because we know how much we will want in the first place. The finding did not, however, hold true for children. An analysis of 326 participants under the age of 18 years, showed that an average child eat only about 59 percent of what is served to him/her. And this happens because kids are uncertain about whether they will like a certain food. This should, however, come as good news for those parents who get frustrated that their kids do not clean their plate, when in reality, they do.
Wansick said that the findings that were published in the International Journal of Obesity can effectively impact a certain individual’s eating behaviour. This is because just knowing that we are likely to consume almost all of what is served to us, we can become more mindful of the appropriate portion size.
