Human Infertility caused by Chemicals in Plastic

New study shows that there could be a link between unexplained infertility and the chemicals that are used in plastic.

man and woman facing infertilityA new study has revealed that exposure to common environmental chemical Bisphenol-A (BPA) could be a factor as to why infertile couples have difficulty in conceiving.

It was said that the exposure to BPA is found everywhere, patients and medical professionals should be aware that it may cause a significant disruption to the basics of human reproductive process and may also play a role in infertility. This was said by Dr Catherine Racowsky, PhD, director of the Assisted Reproductive Technologies Laboratory at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH). The study examined 352 eggs from 121 consenting patients at a fertility clinic and was exposed to different levels of BPA in the laboratory setting.

Egg from each patient was examined and found that the exposure to BPA caused a decrease in the percentage of eggs that matured an increase in the percentage of eggs that degenerated, an increase in the percentage of eggs that underwent spontaneous activation. It was found that with the increase in the dose of BPA, there was a decrease in the maturity and an increase in the spontaneous activation. Spontaneous activation is when the egg acts as though it has been fertilized, whereas in reality it hasn’t.

The study has been published online in the journal Human Reproduction.
