Resigning oneself to therapy to solve one’s problems never works. To rid of compulsive eating disorder you cannot take a tokenistic approach but keep your mind open. A therapist or counsellor’s purpose is to guide you through the road to healing but to take all those steps is your own task. This task requires 24 hour vigilance and miracles cannot be expected to occur.


Step 1



Confession: Having recognised your problem it is important to not only admit it to yourself. Telling other people who are important in your life is the first step towards reclaiming your life. You may be eager to come out to other people as you grow more enthusiastic in solving your problem. Not everyone, though can be expected to show appropriate sensitivity. Lest it should dishearten you, lack of compassion should be used to identify those who are irrelevant to your course of action.


Step 2


Time Management: This translates directly into food management. Most people suffreing from compulsive eating disorders do not wait to get hungry to eat. Keeping yourself busy in constructive activities outside professional work helps to elevate you from going back to pattern like behaviour in your previously empty hours.


Step 3


Shifting Focus: Those who help others are certain to help themselves. You do not have to work with other food addicts if it makes you feel worse about yourself. Holding up a constant mirror may have a demoralising effect. Instead, dealing with people who have completely different problems may propel you to think about yours in a more beneficial manner. If you help say, a child with a stammer you will see that at the most basic level she or he is striving for self improvement as well.


Step 4



Damage Control: An another strategy to shift your energies away from compulsive eating is to go back to observe how your choices affected others. Revisiting your recent past from the perspective of those around you may cause an emotional upheaval. You can use this event to not just be audience to grievances but to actively make amends.


Step 5



Admitting Difficulties: To understand the unique nature of your problem you need to be aware that it is a difficult process. It is easy to be harsh on yourself but that can cause further wounding and eventual relapse. It becomes easy to give up and give in when you either underestimate or overestimate the enemy. Admit to yourself realistically that it is tough but also be reminded that it is not insurmountable.
