Negative thinking is a common problem in people suffering from depression. Not only does it affect your day to day life, negative thinking also paves way for chronic depression.

For a normal person, it is easier to process and manage the negative thoughts and circumstances faced in daily life, however for someone already suffering from depression, these negative thought patterns become too much to handle and lead to anxiety, panic and a feeling of helplessness. Dealing with negative thoughts and situations is very different for someone who is a victim of depression. Here are some tips on how to fight depression and manage negative thoughts

Write it down

Keeping a journal is advised by many psychiatrists as a way to release your pent up emotions. It works as a tool to help you see what is going on in your mind. Try to be honest when you write and go with the flow. It will help you understand your thought patterns and also will help to keep a track of behaviours and circumstances that trigger negative thoughts. 

Physical health and well-being

A healthy mind resides in a healthy body. Most of your thoughts and the reactions and emotions caused by it are a direct result of chemical reactions and changes in your body. A healthy body paves way for a healthy mind. Include exercise in your daily schedule and eat a healthy diet. Making efforts to change your lifestyle and improve your health can be a way to pick yourself up from the mental rut. 

Cognitive therapy

If you are not able to handle the depression and negativity yourself, it might be time to see a professional. Cognitive therapies can reduce the life-span of depression and help with the symptoms such as fatigue and sleeplessness


Make it a point to keep some time of the day for yourself. Depression and stress cause a great deal of tension and leaves you wound up and tired. Try to relax by including a routine such as pampering yourself to a bubble bath or visiting the spa once a week. You can enjoy a hot cup of tea or hot chocolate before sleep to help you unwind. 

Be aware

We tend to stow away any negative feelings which we are faced with, as dealing with them is an uncomfortable and tough task. Make it a habit to face your thoughts and deal with them. This way you will be less scared and less affected by the negative thoughts and will be able to overcome them easily.
