Weight-loss pills: These include orlistat (Xenical), which decreases the absorption of dietary fat by 30%; amphetamine derivatives and sibutramine (Meridia). To help you lose weight, your doctor may prescribe medications along with a calorie-restricted diet. Regrettably, almost all the people regain weight when they stop using these medications. The effects of long-term use of these drugs have not been determined.
There are many over-the-counter diet pills available for weight loss. These contain ingredients that can increase heart rate and blood pressure. These are not recommended as these are associated with several side-effects, such as feeling jittery, nervous and having heart palpitations. Diet pills with other ingredients may also elevate blood pressure. Some experts believe that the diet pills may be linked with an increased risk of stroke.

Weight-loss surgery: Weight loss surgery is done when obesity is severe (a BMI greater than 40). Besides surgical procedure to cut the flab off, doctors recommend limiting the amount of food the body can digest. One such surgery is gastroplasty, also known as stomach stapling, in which a surgeon creates a small pouch in the stomach that allows only limited amount of food to be eaten at one time. This procedure can be done using a laparoscope.
The safest and healthiest way to treat obesity is to exercise and make the necessary lifestyle modifications as recommended by your doctor.
