Muscle strain is a common reason for pain in different parts of our body and it is also therefore, the cause for thigh pain. An aching thigh shouldn’t be ignored as it may lead to severe conditions such as groin pull, a pulled hamstring or bursitis that will mandate medical attention.  A bruise along with severe pain in and around your thigh may indicate some other underlying medical problem in the case of which you must not avoid visiting the doctor. If it’s mild pain or pain accompanied by swelling, you may get relief by resorting to these thigh pain management techniques.

Do not put strain on thighs

REST, REST and REST! Keeping still is the most effective remedy to ease the pain in your thighs. It is advised not to put strain or pressure on your aching thigh by standing for prolonged hours. Refrain from engaging in activities that require standing for hours. If your thigh aches even when you’re sitting, try to lie down whenever you get an opportunity to.

Apply Ice Pack

A pack of ice can relieve pain in your thighs to a great extent. Put a few ice cubes in a plastic bag and press it gently on the part of the thigh that is aching. Let the pack of ice be placed on your thigh for about 20 minutes and you would soon feel an improvement. If the pain continues to trouble, place the ice bag on your thigh after every three hours.

Use an Elastic Bandage

If your aching thigh is inflamed, you may reduce the pain and the inflammation by wrapping your thigh with an elastic bandage. Such bandages are readily available in medical stores. Reducing the swelling is a prerequisite to scaling down the intensity of pain in your thigh.

Elevate your Legs

Do a simple exercise that requires you to elevate your legs completely with the help of a pillow. Place 2 or 3 average-sized pillows under your thigh and elevate your thighs to the same level as your chest. This will stretch the aching muscles, bringing relief to the pain slowly.

Take anti-inflammatory Medicine/Painkillers

To reduce swelling in your thigh, you may take anti-inflammatory medications such as Tylenol or ibuprofen. To relieve pain, take a prescribed dose of pain killers.

If the pain in your thighs does not subside despite resorting to the above mentioned steps, consult a doctor soon. He may suggest an x-ray of your thigh to look for any underlying fracture or suggest undergoing pain management technique.
