How to Feed a Baby Breast Milk: Feeding Babies & Children?

Newborn Care - How to Feed Baby Breast Milk? To clear your doubts or worries regarding breastfeeding talk to your doctor or nurse, also read this article for some initial pointers.

As soon as you bring home your baby, the process of bonding starts and breastfeeding further develops this bond.  Experts say that breastfeeding is good for your baby’s health and growth, but there are many concerns a new mother may have regarding breastfeeding. To clear your doubts talk to your doctor or nurse, but read here for some initial pointers.

Ask the nurse at the hospital to help you start feeding the baby.

  • Feed the baby on demand or about 8 to 12 times per day. Let your baby feed for about 15 to 20 minutes during each nursing. Your baby can decide how much milk he wants. Do try to feed by force
  • You should allow the baby to have feed from both breasts at each feeding. This helps to increase milk production
  • To ensure that you secrete enough milk, eat properly. You need about 500 additional daily calories during lactation. You should eat a healthy balanced diet, drink plenty of fluids and take the supplements recommended by your doctor
  • A major concern is when the baby isn’t getting enough milk. If he sleeps well after the feed, wets about 6-8 wet diapers per day, and passes soft stools then he is getting enough milk. Weight gain also is a good guide of adequate feeding after the first few days. If your baby is losing weight after the first 7-10 days, then probably the feed is not enough

Consult your doctor to rule out any other problems.
