How to encourage a child not to wet the bed?

If bed wetting is no laughing matter for you, the same is true for your child. It is distressing and can have psychological effects on the child. Remember that children do not wet bed on purpose. Some bed wetting solutions are as follows:

  • They might be wetting their beds out of fear. Talk to your child about it and find out the reason behind it. Plan on how to clean up after bed wetting, such as if is the child’s responsibility to  clean up. Do not let it seem like a punishment or embarrassment. Keep the linen for change close to the bed. This will allow privacy and discretion when he cleans up.
  • Do not scold or tease him for wetting the bed. A major concern for children who wet the bed is embarrassment.
  • Use positive encouragement or reward method to overcome bedwetting rather than punishments such as you can  treat them if he doesn’t wet the bed for one whole week.
  • Consult your doctor. He may prescribe medications for it or refer you for behavioral therapy. There are several other techniques to prevent bed wetting such as silent buzzers alerting the child to wake up.
  • Use waterproof sheets for mattress protection.

Remember that most children outgrow bet wetting. You have to be patient and considerate. Avoid punishing or  embarrassing the child.
