A person finds peace at home, but incidents of domestic abuse or violence take that away! Either the abuse is just verbal, or it involves physical force, it severely impacts a person’s mental and psychological health. Besides, it not only leaves the sufferer in distress but also puts him to the risk of getting mentally ill.
Domestic abuse is a crime but not all dare to stand up and speak against this act. They end up in long-term suffering due to the violence that they face at home. In India, women are most affected by domestic violence, where the cases of domestic abuse against men are significantly lower. Dealing with this issue becomes even more complicated when they do not get any support from their family & friends. This increases the risk of mental imbalance in them as they are unable to vent out what is bothering them.
Mental Health Issues Caused Due To Domestic Violence
Physical or sexual abuse at home deteriorates your mental condition. The person experiences multiple emotions like fear, anger and confusion altogether, which hampers his/her cognitive health and increases the chances of getting any of the following problems:
- Anxiety Disorders: Intense fear for more extended periods trigger anxiety disorders. The person gets anxious over small things and often loses confidence. Seeing the abuser deteriorates the condition. This gets worse with time.
- Depression: Depression is ubiquitous in the sufferers of domestic violence. They get suicidal thoughts, and some even end up committing suicide resisting the situation in the absence of proper support and guidance.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
PTSD is a severe health condition that the person gets after a traumatic experience. Domestic abuse or violence is a highly traumatizing act that leaves the sufferer with a mark for a lifetime. In PTSD, the person gets:
- Sleep disorders like insomnia
- Get seizures
- Suffer angry outbursts
- Forgetfulness and memory loss
- Get negative thoughts
How can the victim manage mental health
The first thing that you need to do is get away with the abuser. As soon as you distance from that person, you’ll begin to regain your mental power. Other than that, here are different ways to restore your mental health:
Talk to a psychologist and explain your situation. Be brave and tell the doctor everything that you are dealing with. There is no other person than a doctor to give you the best advice to overcome this.
Confide in someone you’re close to: Keeping things with you won’t help but only deteriorate the condition. You must confide in someone to let go of the unnecessary thoughts.
Self-care: Domestic violence means no love and care. At such a time, it is essential that you start loving and caring for yourself. This reduces the symptoms of mental health, and you gain your cognitive power with time.
Make a hobby: To calm your mind, you need to divert it from other thoughts. What’s best than practising something that you loved doing. Either painting, dancing, exercising, writing or anything that makes you happy.
These are general tips that won’t completely erase the marks of abuse from your mind but would reduce them slowly.
