Coronary heart disease occurs as a result of a plaque in the coronary arteries, and leads to blockages. There are certain factors that contribute to this problem, such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking and so on.

How do you get Coronary Heart Disease

The heart faces many complications and diseases, which is a result of plaque in the coronary arteries, this condition is called atherosclerosis, and this leads to blockages. These arteries start out smooth and elastic, and then become narrow and rigid thus restricting blood flow to the heart. You heart will slowly be deprived of oxygen and all the vital nutrients that it requires for it to pump properly. This can then cause chest pain known as angina, and when one or more of the coronary arteries are blocked then a heart attack may occur.

The coronary heart diseases occur when certain factors damage the inner layers of the coronary arteries, and here we have listed some causes for it.


What we know as cholesterol is actually fat that is made by the liver from the saturated fat that we eat in our daily lives. Cholesterol is essential for healthy cells, however too much of it can lead to trouble. Your body’s cholesterol is carried in the blood stream by molecules that are known as lipoproteins, and there are seven different types of lipoproteins in all. The two main ones are low density lipoproteins and high density lipoproteins.
The low density ones are often referred to as bad cholesterol and it takes cholesterol from the lover and sends it into the cells. This type of cholesterol builds up on the walls of the coronary arteries and increases the risk of a heart disease. The high density cholesterol on the other hand is referred to as the good cholesterol and it carries it from the cells back to the liver. Here it is broken down or is passed from the body as a waste product.

High Blood Pressure

Also known as hypertension, this puts a strain in the heart and that leads to coronary heart disease. During your blood circulation the blood pressure is measured in two points, they are systolic pressure of the blood that is measured as the heart contracts and pumps the blood out. The diastolic pressure on the other hand is a measure of the blood pressure when the heart is filling up blood and is considered to be in a relaxed state.
Your body’s blood pressure is measured in terms of millimeters of mercury and the systolic pressure is measured first then the diastolic pressure.

This is one of the major risk factors for coronary heart diseases, if you are a smoker then you must quit at the earliest. The carbon monoxide form your cigarette along with nicotine put a strain on your heart by making it work faster, and they also increase your risk of blood clots. There are many chemicals present in your cigarette as well; this damages the lining of your coronary arteries, thus leading to furring of the arteries. You increase the risk of developing heart disease by 24% if you smoke.
High blood sugar level doesn’t really increase the risk of developing coronary heart disease directly, but it may lead to diabetes. The condition will however double the risk of developing coronary heart disease. Diabetes can lead to coronary heart disease because it may cause the lining of the blood vessels to thicker and thus will restrict the blood flow.


It is a blood clot within your artery or a vein and occurs in the coronary artery, also known as coronary thrombosis. Thrombosis causes the artery to narrow, thus preventing the blood supply from reaching the heart muscle; this increases your chance of having a heart attack. Coronary thrombosis happens at the same place as where the atherosclerosis is forming.
