How do you define Diabetes and Hair loss?

Do you know diabetes can cause hair loss. The connection between diabetes and hair loss is well established. Diabetes affects the growth of hair that gradually leads to thinning of hair.

Why does this happen?

All of us lose hair daily---about 50 and 100 hairs. In a healthy person the rate of hair loss and hair re-growth are same ---hence hair loss does not occur.

Diabetes leads to poor circulation to the skin and makes your skin sensitive to problems. Poor circulation decreases the skin ability to heal and hence healing becomes slow. Therefore if you have diabetes it takes more time for your body to re-grow the lost hair---and hair thinning is noted.

If you have diabetes and notice excessive hair loss and hair thinning ----- seek medical assistance.

What can you to prevent hair loss

  • Maintain blood sugar as normal as possible---take your medication regularly as prescribed by your doctor. Go for regular follow up for blood sugar level checking.
  • If the hair loss is due to some problem like diabetes-related fungal infection, then treatment of the underlying cause can stop the hair loss.
  • Maintain healthy body weight
  • Eat healthy diet
  • Do regular exercises
  • Avoiding smoking, and alcohol

If your hair loss is severe and permanent then your options include----hair transplant or wearing a hair piece or wig.

But remember that in people with diabetes good control of blood sugar is the best way to prevent or stop hair loss.
