How can Throat Cancer be Prevented?

Throat Cancer (Larynx And Pharynx) Prevention - Know the measures that can reduce the risk of throat cancer. These include saying no to smoking, eating healthy and other tips.

Throat cancer or in fact any cancer is a dreaded disease. Cure for throat cancer depends on the stage of disease—about 90% of patients with early cancer are cured whereas cure rate for cancer which has spread (metastasised) to parts of the body beyond the head and neck is poor. As treatment for cancer is not very successful and prognosis remains poor, measures to prevent throat cancer are considered important. There are no measures which will definitely prevent cancer but some measures can reduce your risk of throat cancer.

Some measures which can reduce the risk of Throat Cancer

  • Stop smoking: Studies have shown that both smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke increase a person’s risk of developing throat cancer. Tobacco is known to contain many substances which are carcinogens (that is cancer-causing agents). These carcinogens invade the cells in the throat and eventually cause changes which leads to them to grow uncontrollably. The uncontrollable growth of these cells results in cancerous growth in the throat. If you smoke, quit. Quitting decreases the risk of throat cancer even in people who have been smoking for a long time. If needed consult a professional to learn about strategies, such as medication, nicotine replacement products and counselling to stop smoking.
  • Drink alcohol in moderation: Drinking is known to increase the risk of throat cancer. Hence drinking in moderation is appropriate. This means no more than one serving of an alcoholic beverage a day for women and no more than two drinks a day for men.
  • Eat healthy: Choose a healthy diet that contains whole grain food products, fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables contain plenty of vitamins and antioxidants. The antioxidants may reduce your risk of throat cancer. Your diet should include a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables.
  • Be cautious with chemicals: If you handle chemicals on your job or around the house, be sure to follow the directions for its use. Breathing hazardous chemical fumes may increase the risk of throat cancer. Ensure that the room where you work is properly ventilated and preferably wear a mask over your nose and mouth.

Know your risk factors: Make yourself aware of your throat cancer risk factors. Some of the common risk factors of throat cancer are smoking, heavy drinking, family history of throat cancer and suppressed or weak immune systems. You cannot change your family history of throat cancer but can definitely work on modifiable risk factors such as smoking and alcohol consumption.
