Homoeopathy: A Medical Therapy

Homoeopathy is a system of medical therapy that concentrates on care of the whole person by methods that are gentle and sympathetic to the body`s needs. It deals with the person as a whole, explains Dr Satish Gala.

HomoeopathyHomoeopathy is a system of medical therapy that concentrates on care of the whole person by methods that are gentle and sympathetic to the body`s needs. It deals with the person as a whole. It developed from investigations carried by a German physician Dr Samuel Hanhnemann. This development has been generally independent of other kinds of therapy, but homoeopathy is in many ways, complementary to other systems of health care.

The word Homoeopathy was coined by Dr Hahnemann from two Greek words , homoios ( like) and pathos (suffering ). Hahnemanns`s  words neatly sums up one of the basic principles of homoeopathy ,which has been expressed for centuries in medical treatises by the Latin tag similia similibus curantur ,meaning like is cured by like.

Together with the principle of like cures like, homoeopathy couples a second equally important concept-use of minimum dose. The appropriateness of homoeopathic medicines has been determined by monitoring the effects of various substances on healthy people. This is known as proving. A patient who displays signs and symptoms similar to those produced by the large dose is given a minimum dose of the same substance, to stimulate his or her body`s own defense systems. Briefly, the illness and the remedy that is prescribed to treat it produce a similar set of symptoms. The key word is similar, not same.

One major advantage of homoeopathy is its safety. While its medicines are powerful in action, working with the body`s own defenses, their actual strength is too low to give rise to the undesirable side effects.

The homoeopathic view of disease

A central principle of homoeopathic diagnosis and treatment concerns the signs and symptoms of a disease. Homoeopathic practitioners regard them as expressions of the way in which the body itself is endeavoring to combat disease. They see them as positive indications of the body`s attempt to maintain the status quo.

This view of illness leads naturally to the way in which a homoeopath looks upon somebody who is ill. Rather than seeing the patients as mere objects exhibiting particular pathological symptoms, homoeopaths look first at the person as a whole. This is because they recognize that, if symptoms reflect the patients response to illness (rather, then the illness itself), it is necessary to take account of everything about the patient before the symptoms can be correctly understood. A particular patient may exhibit different signs & symptoms in response to a disease such as cold etc at different times. The signs and symptoms depend on the person’s age, general health and vitality, previous medical history and even state of mind.

If you have strong vitality and basic good health, then when you fall ill your body`s ability to heal itself is likely to be good. You will quickly throw off the the complaint is. Typically, you experience temporary symptoms indicating that your system is attempting to return to health, but they follow a predictably improving course.

On the other hand, if you have a ailment when you already are feeling run down and your vitality is low then the healing process is delayed and complicated and might require medical intervention.

According to homoeopathic principles, seeking help with the healing process is necessary only when your own self healing mechanism fails and is unable to complete the normal process of returning to your usual state of health. This is when you need homeopathic medicine.

Homoeopathy-Holistic healing

Homoeopathy is holistic because it considers the whole person while treating it. Few people will dispute the reality of their body, their emotions or their mental processes. In holistic and homoeopathic terms, aspects of all diseases manifest themselves at every level and total health and well being depend upon the harmony and balance being present at each plane of being.

We all have our own genetically determined constitution, which dictates our optimum health level. Homoeopathy looks beyond the outward physical aspect, believing that the mind and will are the most powerful aspects of the person, followed by the emotions and lastly the physical body.

Who all can homoeopathy help?

Homoeopathy is a sophisticated system of medicine which can effectively treat adults, children & animals too. It can also, in many instances be used as a complementary therapy when even surgery is a necessary procedure.

There are more then 2000 homoeopathic remedies in use and new medicines are still being researched and added to this long list. A wide range of substances used to make these medicines are plants, metals, minerals, insects, reptiles, chemical compounds and animal products. These medicines have been tested (or proved) homeopathically and are included in the homoeopathic material medica (pharmacology) which lists characteristic symptoms associated with each remedy. Whatever your complaint is homoeopathic treatment can help your body in its efforts to cure itself.
