Home tests for diabetes are easy ways to detect the occurrence of diabetes. These tests are simple to perform and are a good way to check your sugar level.
Various tests are available for diabetes which one can perform at home very easily. These tests are simple and quite affordable.
These home test methods give nearly exact results and are quite effective in determining the onset of diabetes. Some of the home tests for diabetes are:
Blood sugar meter is very easy to use and it gives an exact reading of the blood glucose level. The kit comes with test trips and a lancing device. A drop of blood is taken on the test strip by piercing the finger with the lancet. Now the strip is inserted into the meter that calculates your blood sugar level. Before touching the strips, make sure that your hands are properly washed and wiped. The normal fasting sugar should lie in a range between 70-130mg/dl and after eating it should be less than 180mg/dl.
Urine Test Strips
Urine test strips are easier to use as compared to blood sugar meter. It gives you an idea about whether you are on the verge of developing diabetes or not. Put a drop of urine on these strips and notice the colour change. Then match it with the colour bar given on the bottle to know about your glucose level. This test gives an approximate percentage of sugar level in your blood.
Gluco-watch resembles a normal wrist watch and the patient is required to wear it all the time. The watch sends minute electrical signals as soon as it comes in touch with body fluids. It takes out fluids from the skin and measures the sugar content in them. It repeats this process thrice per hour for 12 hours. It’s a very easy process as no pricking is required, but it’s not as accurate as blood sugar meter.
This kit mainly checks the level of haemoglobin A1C in the blood. This test gives an average of blood sugar levels for three months.
Alternative Site Meters
There are some blood glucose meters that test sugar level from other sites of the body. These could be upper arm, forearm, thumb base and thighs. Generally the results obtained from alternative site meter can vary drastically from that obtained through blood sugar meter. This occurs because there is a difference in blood sugar levels in the finger tips compared to other body sites. So if you measure the sugar level after food, blood sugar meter will show the variation but alternative site meter might not.
People suffering from diabetes or who are at risk of developing diabetes should maintain a record of their blood glucose level on a regular basis. By these home tests one can easily keep a check on diabetes.
