HIV protection by nanoparticleIn a recent attempt scientists have created a type of nanoparticle that they believe would be efficient in delivering vaccines to the lungs and protecting against numerous infectious diseases.

The researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have declared that nanoparticle vaccine could help one to protect against influenza and other such respiratory diseases. Also it could prevent sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, human papilloma virus and herpes somplex virus. This new development could be ground breaking for treating such diseases.

The scientists said that many bacterias and viruses do infect humans through mucosal surfaces like the ones in the lungs. Hence, they saw the needs to develop vaccines that are able to establish a front line of defense at mucosal surfaces. Presently, there are limited mucosal vaccines that have been approved for the usage of humans. You have the Sabin polio which is given orally that eventually get absorbed in the digestive tract, and you also have the flu vaccine which is delivered as a nasal spray.

The researchers from MIT were however looking for a more progressive and better mode of delivering such vaccines.
The nanoparticle works efficiently by protecting the vaccine long enough so as to generate a strong immune response in the lungs and as well as in mucosal surfaces away from the site of vaccination such as reproductive and gastrointestinal tracts.

This is according to a study published in Science Translational Medicine.
