High Blood Pressure and Erectile Dysfunction

High Blood Pressure and Erectile Dysfunction: High blood pressure also can causes erectile dysfunction. Read in this article on how high blood pressure causes erectile dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction is a common problem among men of all ages. According to studies about 70% of men experience episodes of erectile dysfunction at some point in their lives.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

There are many factors which can cause erectile dysfunction. Some of the common causes of erectile dysfunction include

  • High blood pressure or hypertension
  • Blood vessel problems or diseases
  • Diabetes
  • Some medications
  • Doing certain exercises too much (like bike riding, weight lifting)

Hypertension and erectile dysfunction

According to studies erectile dysfunction is more common as well as more serious in men with hypertension. Like approximately 30% of men will experience one episode of erectile dysfunction in a month where as about 70% men with hypertension experience one episode of erectile dysfunction in a month. Severe erectile dysfunction (more than three episodes in a month) is experienced by 45% of men with hypertension where as only about 5% of men with normal blood pressure have severe erectile dysfunction

How High Blood Pressure Causes Erectile Dysfunction

The exact reason by which hypertension causes erectile dysfunction is not known. Some experts hypothesize that increase of pressure in the blood vessels due to hypertension possibly damages the small arteries in the penis. These arteries dilate and are filled with blood in response to sexual stimulation which results in erection.

Hypertension or high blood pressure damages the arteries which the body then repairs. Repeated episodes of damage and healing cause the arteries to become thicker, to resist further damage. However these thicker arteries fail to respond as fast, or as completely, to demands for extra blood in response to sexual stimulation and thus lead to erectile dysfunction.

Besides the effect of high blood pressure on erectile dysfunction many medications used for treatment of hypertension can cause or worsen erectile dysfunction.

Some drugs which are known to have this side effect include;

  • Clonidine
  • Spironolactone
  • Thiazides

Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction Caused by High Blood Pressure

The most important step in treating erectile dysfunction is to identify the underlying cause of the problem.

  • If you have hypertension treatment or reduction of blood pressure to acceptable levels will be essential.
  • If your blood pressure is with in normal range you may be prescribed drugs like Viagra and Cialis. These are phosphodiesterase inhibitors and are effective for treating erectile dysfunction
  • People with severe, or treatment-resistant erectile dysfunction may need options such as surgery, penile injections, or alternate drug therapy.
