Whenever we go out for Persian food, I always order Salad-e Shirazi (Shirazi Salad.) It is a simple and bright cucumber and tomato salad that’s loaded with herbs and dressed in lime juice and extra virgin olive oil! This quick no-lettuce salad is the perfect side to almost any entree. And I just love how festive it looks! I made my own version. The recipe is up on the blog. Flexitarian I absolutely love that more and more attention is being given to our impact on the environment, especially through our food choices. While a vegan diet has been touted as the ‘single biggest way to reduce impact’, that doesn’t mean that it’s the only choice for those of us who just aren’t ready or keen for such a change. A study found that greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture could be reduced by more than half if people followed a flexitarian diet! So WTF is flexitarian and how does it help? ⠀ Veggies, leafy greens, and plant based proteins and foods (grains, nuts, legumes, beans) as the base + bulk of your meals. Kinda like a mediterranean based diet. When I do eat animal products and meat/fish, they’re almost like a “side” dish to complement all the veg. Fibre, rainbow veg + greens are the main event but it allows flexibility to incorporate meats and fish as and when. ⠀ Agriculture is a significant driver of global warming, half of which comes from livestock. Recent research has also found that meat and dairy account for 83% of farmland and 60% of greenhouse gas emissions! ⠀ As a personal choice I avoid red meat (especially beef) and cow dairy as they are the biggest taxers on the environment. Beef uses 28 times more land and 11 times water than other meats, such pork or chicken. Matt has named us “moo-tarians” and I like it haha. If you’re not ready, try limiting red meats to once a week, and going meatless once a week (aka #meatlessmonday). ⠀ What does it actually look like? For so people it’s decreasing the days you eat meat, for some it’s re-focusing how you build your meals. So for example when building a lunch bowl, I throw in 2 cups of greens (spinach, broccoli, kale, etc), 1 cup rainbow veggies (peppers, beets, carrots, etc), about 1/2 - 1 cup fibre and starches (grains, sweet potato, pumpkin, etc), 1-2 tbsp nuts + seeds, and then 1 portion of protein (tofu, tempeh, beans, legumes, and occasionally fish, eggs, etc).
The flexitarian diet is also known as a vegetarian (flexible) diet. It is essentially plant-based, but once in a while, you can have a steak. This diet entails eating regularly fruits, legumes, vegetables, and whole grains (in short, getting protein from plants). At times, you can add animal products but try to stick mostly to the zero-processed natural foods. Are you willing to turn vegetarian? Then this flexitarian diet is a good option for you.

Let’s Sweet Talk - I’ve cut on sugar alcohols (sweeteners) for about 6 weeks now and have been using fruit as an alternative for my sweet tooth ! Fruits & vegetables may be higher in carbohydrates, but are also a more natural source. (No one ever became unhealthy from fruits or vegetables). ———————————————————— WHAT ARE SUGAR ALCOHOLS ?? It’s a popular alternative to sugar and contains fewer calories. Sugar alcohols are partially resistant to digestion, so they act as dietary fiber in the body. Most have little to no effect on blood sugar and insulin levels, hence why it’s so popular on a ketogenic diet. ———————————————————————— TYPES OF SUGAR ALCOHOL ?? A. Healthy: Allulose, Erythritol, Xylitol, Monk Fruit. B. Unhealthy: Maltitol, Stevia in the raw (contains dextrose) , Sucrose, Fructose, Sucralose, dextrose, maltodextrin. ———————————————————————— WHY I’VE CUT THEM ?? Keto friendly / low carb cookies, ice cream, cakes, etc are such a better option than high carb foods. BUT, junk food is junk food and too much is still not healthy. Any period of time cleansing the body from sugar alcohols is great, especially for a weight loss stall. Personally, sugar alcohols were still stimulating my brain the same way as sugar does. I was having waaaay to many per day and found it as an addictive substance, with too many cravings. ————————————————————————— WHAT TO SUBSTITUTE ?? Fruits & nuts are high in magnesium, which also subsides the “sugary” cravings due to low magnesium. Or adding protein is super filling! # # #ketoweightloss #weightloss #ketofitness #ketobeginner #ketocommunity #utahfitfam #mombod #strong #fitmomsofig #workout #fitness #atkins #paleo #paleolifestyle #atkinsdiet #motivation #inspire #keto #ketofam #ketodiet #diet #lifestyle #ketogenic #ketogenicdiet #lchf #fruit #sweet #sweettooth
