The monsoon brings down the strength of the immune system to fight diseases, making us fall prey to a host of diseases known to occur in the season. It is well and good to take precautions such as having boiled water, staying away from street food, bulk preparation of food, but for how long can you ignore the cravings of your platter? Recipes for some delicious foods suitable in monsoon can help.


Rehydrating broth


  • Half cup of rice.
  • Four cups of water.
  • Half a spoon of ginger paste.
  • Half a teaspoon of jeera powder.
  • Salt to taste.
  • Half a cup of pomegranate juice.
  • One tablespoon of honey.


Cook rice with the amount of water recommended along with ginger paste, jeera powder and salt. Mix pomegranate juice along with honey when the gruel is warm. Have this gruel to rehydrate your body and get energy too. The inflammation in the walls of your intestine would be smoothened and the bowel movements would be under control.


Healing rice (is anti-flatulent).


  • Half a cup of rice.
  • Four cups of water.
  • Half a spoon of haritaki powder.
  • 2-3 roots of pipli or long pepper.
  • Half a pinch of asafoetida powder.
  • Salt to taste.


Mix haritaki powder, pipli, rice and water and bring them to boil. Add salt. Have this concoction while it is warm. You will get relief from flatulence and have a regular bowel movement.

If you stick to recipes like the ones given above and follow certain diet modifications, it will help you avoid the health hazards in the season. In particular, indigestion and related complications must be guarded against and immunity must be boosted to stay health in the season.   • Have more of warm beverages. Mix dry ginger powder or mint in your tea.
  • Have foods that are sour naturally. Do not have fermented foods. Tomato, tamarind, lime, thin buttermilk and kokum should be taken. Include more of these in your soups, vegetables and dals.
  • Have more of moong dal as it is easier to digest.
  • Include ginger, pepper, asafoetida, sonth, coriander, turmeric and jeera in your diet as they enhance your immunity.
  • Avoid heavy curries and take to lighter meats, i.e. if you cannot do without non-veg food.
  • Mildly bitter and mildly pungent foods should be preferred in the season.
  • Do not eat foods taken right out of the fridge. Have as much of fresh foods as possible. If you want to store cooked food and eat it later, remember to warm it a little always before eating.
