During pregnancy, the mother is advised to consume healthily and a balanced diet so that both the mother and baby are healthy. However, what we always heard from the elder members in the family was that the mother had to eat twice as she is supposed to be eating for two people in pregnancy. However, let us tell you that there is no truth behind this logic. Weight gain in pregnancy is normal and not an unknown phenomenon. With weight, the breasts and stomach grow comparatively larger than normal. However, the right type of weight gain can only be explained by an expert. Some women may be underweight and some overweight. Hence, this video describes how weight gain during pregnancy differs from person to person. One person’s healthy weight gain during pregnancy can be unhealthy for other pregnant ladies. Onlymyhealth got in touch with Dr Swati Bathwal, Nutritionist, to know her views on this topic.
As per Dr Swati, “More weight or less weight, both can be detrimental for both, the mother and the baby. If the mother is underweight before pregnancy, the weight gain should be between 12-18 kilos. If the expecting mother is obese or on the heavier side, the weight gain should be around 7-11 and a half kilos. If the BMI is in control, the weight gain can be around 11-16 kilos. Hence, it is essential to check with your doctor for the ideal weight.”
