The dark brownish patches usually appear on the cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose and chin; however they can also appear on the neck and forearms. Although, skin discolouration does not affect you physically but it can surely make you feel self-conscious about how you look. So, why does this melasma occur? Well, the exact cause of melasma is still not known but it has been observed that people who have dark skin are at greater risk than those who have fair skin. Experts believe that it has something to do with the estrogen and progesterone sensitivity which means that birth control pills, pregnancy and hormone therapy can all trigger melasma.
