Ask yourself why it is that you are afraid of commitment. Is it because of your partner? Are you afraid of being cheated? Are you afraid that your partner may not give you the life you dream about? Write these questions down as they crop up in your mind. It is better and more important to know what the issue really is before you can really come to get an answer.

Take a Look at your List

Do the answers to your questions really make any sense? Try to expand on them and get the smallest detail that you possibly can. Take a look at each question from different angles. You could use a couple of days to come to a decision.

Stop Lying to Yourself

A lot of people tend to follow others as far as monogamous relationships are concerned. There are certain expectations that societal assumptions derive out of a man or a woman in a realtionship. If you are not comfortable going by the rules, you do not have to. But, that does not mean that you should disregard relationships completely. Look for relationships that work for you.

Is your Partner on the same Commitment Level?

If your partner is also on the same page as you as far as commitment is concerned, so you will most likely have the freedom to choose when you want to tie the knot. If your partner is in haste to get into a lifelong relationship, he/she is just desperate. If he/she agrees to give you time to think about it, they really care and are looking forward to a relationship with you.

Face your Fear of Commitment

Now that you know what it is that you really fear, feel it. Try to embrace the notion that you can enjoy lifelong commitment only when there is some level of uncertainty. If you are looking for the perfect situation i.e. when you are free of doubts, to come to a decision, it will be too late.

Risks are Good and More Rewarding

Try to understand that life can be more rewarding if you take risks. Take your time to decide if you would like to live with your partner for the rest of your life. You will have all sorts of negatives and positives to dig out from the situation as you see it, but you will eventually be glad you came to a decision.

Give a Boost to your Self-esteem

Building your self-esteem can do much more than what you think. It will not only make you a more confident person, but will also make you strong enough to face your fear of commitment. Go to the gym or join an art class; do something that you are good at. Whether people accept you or not will not change the person that you are and this will make you more confident in approaching your fear with strength.

Stick to your Commitment

Once you have decided that you want to go ahead with commitment, realise that commitment to someone you love, even if that is your best friend, is not something that has an on-again, off-again composition. So, make sure that you do not evade or derail from your commitment.
