Honey: A Boon or a Curse?

Honey holds a very high medicinal value in Ayurveda. However, this boon can soon turn into a curse when it is not consumed in a proper quantity. Here are some side effects honey can have on your body.

Stomach Problems

Honey contains a very small amount of vitamins and minerals in it. To extract those nutritional benefits out of honey, you must consume honey in a large quantity. But when honey is consumed in excessive quantities it can lead to stomach ache.

Sugar versus Honey

Just like sugar, honey also contains 4 calories per gram and you consume 64 calories each time you spread one spoonful of honey on your bread slice. Although honey is sweeter than sugar in taste, it can still give you the desired sweet taste you often end up consuming more honey.

Allergy

Although most people experience no side-effects after having honey yet there are some individuals who may face some allergies. Eating honey may lead them to have rashes or swelling on their body. Also, some people may face difficulties in swallowing and breathing.

Diarrhea

Honey contains fructose in a large quantity which causes digestion troubles in some people. Therefore, consuming honey in excessive quantity can lead to diarrhea.

Harmful for Infants

Infants aged less than 1 year should not be fed with honey as its consumption may lead to development of botulism in the child. Any infant aged below 6 months is highly vulnerable to diseases. Honey in any form when fed to an infant will start showing its side-effects within 8 to 36 hours of consumption.

Increase in Body Weight

Although honey can be a very helpful home remedy for weight reduction, its excessive consumption can lead to increase in body weight.

Other Diseases

Consumption of honey in excessive amount can lead to many diseases like type 2 diabetes, tooth cavity, heart problems and high cholesterol levels.

Loss of Vitamins

Honey when consumed with hot water or milk or when cooked for long can lose its vitamins and essential enzymes.
