9 Things That Could Make Menopause Start Early

What is Menopause

Menopause is the phase in a woman’s life that marks the end of her menstrual cycles. It begins after 12 months of the last menstrual period. It is a natural biological process that is meant to occur in every woman’s life and marks the end of fertility. The average age for menopause to arrive is around 50 years. However there are certain things that can make menopause start early.

Fruits & Vegetables

Most fruits and vegetables are now sprayed with toxic pesticides which can trigger early menopause. To avoid  pesticides, always buy organic fruits and vegetables as often as you can.

Candles & Air Fresheners

Most air fresheners including the ones that are advertised as being all-natural contain phthalates. Phthalates have been associated with early onset of menopause. To prevent your menopause from starting early, go for soy-based or beeswax-based candles with a lead-free wick and made of fragrances from essential oils.


Few years ago children’s toys and some child care products also contained traces of phthalates. If you have any toy in your house that was manufactured before 2009, discard it and buy a new one for your child as toys are now regulated from containing phthalates in them.

Food Storage Containers

Some plastic food storage containers may also contain phthalates because this chemical makes plastic softer and flexible. To avoid the risk of getting an early menopause, buy storage containers made of glass or stainless steel. Avoid microwaving your food in plastic containers, prefer using microwave-ready dishes.

Personal Care Products

All personal care products including shampoos, lotions, and body washes come in a soft, plastic container that are also fragrant; this can trigger an early menopause owing to the presence of phthalates. Make sure you read the labels and prefer those products that don’t contain any phthalates as ingredient.




Perfumes and colognes usually contain phthalates as they make the scent last longer. To avoid the risk, switch to natural, phthalate-free fragrances such as essential oils. Also use perfumes and colognes only when necessary.

Packed foods

Foods that comes packed in plastic packaging, such as frozen meals, tubs of butter, yogurt, or plastic jars of pretzels could contain phthalates. Avoid foods that are packed in plastic, and opt for products that come in glass or paper packaging.


Continuous exposure to Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) has also been associated with early onset of menopause. Although PCBs have been banned at most places, they can still get to us through indirect means. For example, fish from various sources are still found to be high in PCBs. Avoid fish from sources where water, air or soil may have been exposed to PCBs for long.

Dairy & Meat

PCBs are also found in dairy and meat products. Go for organic dairy and meat products at the supermarket to make sure that antibiotics and growth hormones do not get into your food.
