    The main role of antidepressants is to increase the blood levels of a brain chemical known as serotonin by hampering the reuptake of serotonin by the brain receptors. However, you may do the same thing with the help of some foods like fish and nuts containing omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids help the brain by stimulating the functioning of serotonin and improving the functioning in the hippocampus, a part of the brain which is involved in the formation and storage of memory.     Black pepper is one of the world's most widely and frequently used spice. It contains piperine, a compound that stimulates the nervous system and inhibits the activity of molecules that are responsible for depression. It also increases the levels of serotonin and noradrenaline. According to a study published in the Journal Food and Chemical Toxicology, piperine possesses anti-depression like activity and cognitive enhancing effects that improve brain functioning.     Are you getting enough sleep? Well, if you’re not, here is what you should know. Lack of sleep is one of the common factors that causes irritability, mood swings and depression. You should take around eight-hours of uninterrupted sleep to keep depression and other negative feeling at bay as it helps your brain to relax by stimulating the production of stress-busting hormones.     If you love to drink those large coffee mugs, you should be worried about the number of mugs you finish every day.     Find some place dark and calm for yourself and spend some time alone thinking of nothing. Just sit down comfortably in a dark room and concentrate on your breathing.
