Allergic contact cheilitis

Lip cosmetic, such as lipstick and lip balm, is the most common cause of allergic cheilitis. The condition is characterised by inflammation of the lips, which may involve the perioral layer (the skin around the mouth), the vermilion border, and/or the labial mucosa.

Skin problems

There are several dangerous petrochemicals that are used in manufacturing lipstick. One of the petrochemicals, Bismuth oxychloride, can cause skin irritation, itching, rashes and inflammation.

Dryness and breakouts

Many lipsticks contain mineral oil that can block skin pores to make lips look dry and chapped. Sometimes, mineral oil can lead to breakouts.

Heart problems

Many lipsticks contain a substance, called triclosan, as a preservative. Researchers at the University of California have found that triclosan can cause heart problems. Earlier, triclosan was linked to thyroid and fertility problems.

Affect on nerve system

Lipstick has lead, which is harmful when it gets absorbed by the skin and enters the bloodstream. A neurotoxin, lead affects the nervous system causing behavioural and brain problems.
