Infection in the Family

If you have a relative visiting you over a winter weekend, you become highly vulnerable to catching germs because they spread easily among relatives. According to the founder and president of the Etiquette School of New York Patricia Napier-Fitzpatrick, the usual distance two people maintain while talking is three feet but, the distance decreases to a foot and a half when we are with a family member. Thus, the danger increases. You could use hand sanitizers to avoid germs entering your body. Also, you could use decorative paper hand towels in the place of cloth bathroom hand towels to avoid germs in your house.

The low ventilation conditions while travelling can put you at a very high risk of catching cold. So, to protect yourself and be generous at the same time give some tissues to your fellow traveler and ask them if it is allergies or cold. It they suffer from cold, ask the attendant to change your seat if possible. Also, use hand sanitizer frequently and avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes which are common inlets for germs.

Infection while Sharing Food

If you have a friend who suffers from cold and flu, avoid eating with him from the same plate. If it is just the two of you, ask the waiter to split the dish into two plates. When there is a dish which needs to be shared between four to six people, just make sure that everyone has their own small dish. If you wish to make sure that your friend does not feel bad about your action, politely tell him that you are “Just being careful. So, how about splitting the dishes?”

Cooking when you are Sick

This could be an awkward situation because you do not want people to think that you are doing a shoddy job. What you could do is provide the food but not cook it yourself. Call for a catering order and let your guests have a good time without worrying about falling ill. Also, if they notice that the host isn’t well try not to eat with the guests by making an excuse that you weren’t hungry. This would make your guests a little comfortable hanging around in your place.
