Getting a Mere Blood test can keep you Healthy

The fact that getting a regular checkup is as healthful as eating a balanced diet is no hidden fact. The most common belief that makes regular checkups even more important is 'prevention is always better than cure’. Annual blood tests are the most hassle-free way to uncover hidden risk factors that can put your future health in danger. Nipping the problem in the bud, blood tests can diagnose any problem at a stage where mere changes in the diet, exercise routine and medications can help you prevent the progression of the disease. Here are some blood tests that can help you identify the problem during its early stages.

Complete Blood Count

This test is also known as full blood count (FBC) or full blood exam (FBE) and it gives an insight into the health of the cells in the patient’s blood. When there is an abnormally high or low blood cell count, it can be a sign of presence of one or more diseases. Therefore, CBC becomes one of the most important blood tests in medicine, which can give an overview of a patient’s health.

Glucose Test

Glucose is the primary source of energy used by the blood. A glucose test is used to measure the amount of glucose present in the blood. Usually, the blood glucose level rises a little after a person eats, but it reaches its normal level after insulin is secreted by the pancreas. When the blood glucose levels do not fall back to the normal levels despite everything from diet changes to lifestyle modifications, they can damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves and blood vessels.

HDL Cholesterol

HDL is a good cholesterol because it has less high-density lipoprotein. The test is done to determine the level of HDL in a person’s body. People who have an HDL cholesterol greater than 60 milligrams per deciliter are at a lower risk of heart disease than people who have an HDL cholesterol level that is less than 40mg/dL. To keep the cholesterol levels in check, regular exercise and a healthful diet is important.

Homocysteine is an amino acid which is synthesized in the body. The amino acids are the building blocks of all proteins that get synthesized in the body. When the level of homocysteine crosses 10micromoles/liter in the blood, it can lead to hardening and narrowing of the arteries. This increase in the level is associated with the risk of heart attacks, strokes, blood clot formation and in some cases, Alzheimer’s.

C-reactive Protein

CRP is a protein which is produced by the liver and when its levels rise, an inflammation occurs in the body. This test must be done to keep a check on such random inflammations. But, a low CRP level does not necessarily mean that there is no inflammation in the body as people who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and lupus rarely have an increased level of CRP.

Prostate Specific Antigen

These are proteins that get produced by the cells of the prostate gland. The test is done to measure the level of PSA in a man’s blood. When the level of PSA increases in the blood, it can lead to prostate cancer, inflammation of prostate prostatitis and enlargement of prostate.

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)

The precursor to sex hormones estrogen and testosterone, DHEA, is produced by the adrenal glands. The level of DHEA is at its peak during the twenties and declines with age. When you have a healthy level of DHEA, it supports the immune function, bone density, mood, sexual libido and healthy body composition.

Poor sleep and stress can cause thyroid imbalance in men and women. Hyperthyroidism or an increased level of thyroid, can also indicate goiter and can lead to increased heart rate, anxiety and weight loss. However, if a person suffers from underactive thyroid, he/she suffers from hair loss too along with weight gain and personality changes.
