A lot of things can mess with your fertility

A lot of things can change one’s ability to have a baby such as poor diet, inactive lifestyle, being overweight or underweight, smoking, excess alcohol use, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), hormonal changes and more. Besides these, there are some more that can hinder your chances of getting pregnant.

Toiletries

Antibacterial toiletries can lower your chances of conception. These may contain triclosan, which is associated with endocrine disruption that may mess up the hormones and interfere with your reproductive system. Check for the ingredient when you buy soaps, shampoos and toothpastes.

Cola

Carbonated beverages can affect one’s sperm count. A Danish study suggests that caffeine present in cola hinders sperm count. According to obstetrician Niels Lauersen, co-author of Eat, Love, Get Pregnant: A Couple’s Guide to Boosting Fertility and Having a Healthy Baby suggests that too much sugar can lead to insulin resistance, which disrupts fertility.

Alcohol

A Harvard-based study suggests that women who consume at least one alcoholic beverage per day have nearly 50 percent greater risk of infertility than women who drink no alcohol. The body cannot rid itself of excess hormones when it is busy metabolizing alcoholic beverages.

Laptop

We are in the new-age era where smartphones and laptops have become a necessity. The new-age devices also put you at risk of several diseases, including infertility. A study published in the journal Fertility and Sterility suggests that keeping a laptop on your one's thighs can affect sperm quality and make you infertile.

Your Walls

Water-based paints, varnishes, thinners and stains (those containing glycol ether solvent) can disrupt menstrual cycle and affect fertility. It can also diminish sperm quality in men. When you paint or refinish furniture, avoid paints and varnishes that contain glycol ether.

Laundry Detergents

There are certain chemicals in detergents that can disrupt a woman’s normal menstrual cycle and affect fertility. In addition, these chemicals can affect semen quality. To be on the safer side, switch from petroleum-based detergents to vegetable-based, fragrance-free detergents.

Stress

A study published in the journal Human Reproduction found that high stress levels are associated with an increased risk of infertility. If you’re having a hard time getting pregnant, de-stressing activities such as yoga can be of great help.
