Constipation is usually a sign of something that is not right. One of the obvious culprits for it is a low-fibre diet, and others being ignoring the urge to go, not drinking enough water and a lack of physical activity. But, do you know that even foods can cause your gut trouble?

Dairy is one of the major contributors of gut problems, including constipation. Too much of dairy can slow down your digestion. Cut down on your intake of such foods, and increase fibre intake to keep the digestive system in good shape.

Whether the bread is white or brown, the body doesn’t always absorb it. These may cause bacteria in the colon to ferment fructans (polymer of fructose molecules) to produce gas and contribute to constipation.

A study in the European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology found that bananas are among the top few foods that cause constipation. The green bananas have a high starch content consuming which can cause constipation. Moreover, tannins in bananas also contribute to the gut trouble.

Red Meat

Red meat is not a direct cause of constipation, but it can contribute to it when consumed over a period of time. Red meat remains in the stomach as it takes longer to digest, which contributes to a feeling of fullness. To avoid constipation, pair red meat with plenty of fibre-rich foods.

Fried Foods

Fried foods are quite likely to slow movement through the digestive tract. These are greasy, take a long time to digest to bind you up and be a leading cause of constipation. When you have constipation, eating fried foods can further slow your gastrointestinal movement and make matters worse.

Caffeine can dehydrate you and cause constipation. It is a stimulant that can make bowel movements difficult or less frequent. But if you're dehydrated, caffeine can make you more constipated.

When it comes to chocolate, there is no such thing as overindulgence for chocoholics. However, chocolate has been known to slow down the digestion process. A study published in the European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology identified chocolate as one of the common reasons for constipation.

Potato chips are often overconsumed. Low in fibre and high in fat, they can easily cause constipation, as the combination slows down the digestive system. It's advised to not overindulge in these foods and instead give preference to higher-fibre snack choices which won't be a problem.
