Blend 1 cup apple juice or cider, 1/2 cup low-fat vanilla yogurt, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 1/2 cups frozen pitted cherries together to for an all-time favourite swwwt-tart smoothie. In a blender, combine rice, cinnamon sticks and star anise with 4 cups water. Pulse to blend. Transfer to a large bowl and add another 4 cups water. Soak at room temperature for 4 hours. Return mix to blender and blend until smooth. Run throught a fine sieve into a pitcher. Add pineapple juice, stir to combine. Add sugar and chill. Serve over ice with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon. Seal the canned fruit packed in heavy peach or pineapple syrup in a zip-lock bag and place the bag in the freezer. When the kids are hot and thirsty, submerge the bag in a bowl of hot tap water until the fruit is slightly thawed (about a minute). Pour the syrup into a food processor and slide the frozen fruit onto a cutting board. Chop the fruit into small chunks and put them in the food processor.
