Energy drinks may soon be less desired in comparison with a spoonful of sugar because scientists have proven that a spoonful of sugar does the same thing as any energy drink.

Researchers have recently assessed the impact endurance exercise can have on liver glycogen levels and had also tested multiple drinks to see how different types of sugars may slow the decline of liver glycogen levels, which is a cause for tiredness. The experiment had used long-distance cyclists as participants, and found that both glucose and sucrose can help in maintaining the level of liver glycogen.

Sucrose and glucose are important carbohydrates that are commonly referred to as simple sugars. The researchers, however, found that combining the two sugars can combine the rate at which people can absorb them. Researchers further warned that glucose-only drinks may produce discomfort in the stomach suggesting that sucrose-based alternatives or sugar in water may be a rather helpful substitute.

Lead researcher of the study, Javier Gonzalez said that the study had shown how taking carbohydrates during exercise can prevent depletion of carbohydrates stores inside the liver, but not in muscle. Also, it let the exercise to be felt easier and the gut comfort of the cyclists to have felt better when they had ingested sucrose in comparison with glucose. Gonzalez said that when the goal is to increase availability of carbohydrates, sucrose may be a better carbohydrate source than glucose.

The study was published in the American Journal of Physiology- Endocrinology and Metabolism.
